Eco Survey methodology

Definition
The eco survey is a key step in the EcoChurch program. It is a simple and structured self-assessment tool that enables a church or institution to evaluate its current practices regarding environmental respect and identify concrete steps for improvement. This exercise reflects the biblical idea of “bearing fruit in every good work” (Colossians 1:10) by applying this good work to the stewardship of creation.
Goals
  • Raising Awareness: Understanding where the church or institution stands in terms of ecological commitment.
  • Planning Actions: Setting priorities and realistic goals to become a more sustainable community.
  • Measuring Progress: Assessing improvements over time and celebrating successes.

Usefullness

  • Simplicity: No need to be an expert; it’s accessible to everyone.
  • Practicality: It turns good intentions into measurable actions.
  • Encouragement: It highlights what’s already working and motivates further progress.

Methodology & Encouragements

The eco survey is the first step toward a greener church or community, more faithful to its mission. With this tool, every community can contribute to a healthier country and a preserved creation, one step at a time.

The EcoChurch self-assessment in the Middle East is not about pitting parishes against each other but about uniting them and their members in a shared mission to safeguard creation in the region. It sparks reflection, dialogue, and innovative ideas to foster a dynamic, creative process.

EcoChurch equips parishes and communities with tailored options to care for the environment, leveraging their unique strengths and resources. Financial or administrative challenges should not deter parishes and communities from embarking on this rewarding journey.

The online self-assessment covers diverse aspects, with questions weighted differently—some worth up to 5 points. To advance, parishes or institutions must achieve specific percentages across different areas depending on the certification :

1-14% : Lily as in Luke 12:27 : “Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”

15-50%  : Vine as in John 15:1-8 : “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener… I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit…”

50-75% : Fig as in Proverbs 27:18 : “The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit, and whoever protects their master will be honored.”

75-90% : Olive as in Psalm 52:8 : “But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever.”

95-100% : Cedar as in Psalm 92:12 : “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.”

The assessment is customized to each parish’s context, factoring in specifics like building or land ownership (e.g., parishes without land skip related environmental questions).

Upon attaining the Cedar level, EcoChurch visits the parish to formally present the award. Practical resources and ideas are provided to support implementation, helping parishes navigate Lebanon’s unique challenges effectively.
